Cheers to Gel's 21st year!

Dear Gel,

Today's a time to celebrate...
As we remember and reflect
on the day God gave you to the world -
the 5th of September
year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-six

Your parents would probably say
"You grew up so fast...
into the lady you are now."
Their little angel has grown wings
And excitedly flown away...
To try new things
and experience what this life
has to offer.
One we hope
you are enjoying right now.

Such an amazing lady you are!
With your energy,
your wit,
your beauty,
your smile,
your grace,
your love.

Your friends would have
a lot of things to say about you...
Your kindness
and determination,
the passion and spirit.
That you are not merely
another pretty face,
but one with a sharp wit,
pride and courage to boot.

Your favorite niece would say,
"You are the best 'tita' in the world!"
...when little Sophie finally learns
the joys of being able
to talk with her elders.

Your ate would say...
how wonderful a sister you are!
So caring and thoughtful,
though you might argue
and quarrel at times...
especially with your stubborn streak
as when you insist on being with men
she deems unworthy of you.

As for me,
enough has been said
of what makes you special
in our eyes.

I am simply thankful
our paths crossed...
Somewhere along the corridors
of historic Palma Hall,
in a distinct third world university
by the name of UP Diliman,
which we now proudly call,
our alma mater.

College went by in a breeze...
Permeated with human drama,
of laughter, learning and tears...
As we pondered on
the ills besetting our society,
of theories and philosophers
we grew to admire,
worship,
even hate.

And though some misfortune
had to happen
to friendships we both treasure...
There were lessons
we had to learn
(yes, the hard way),
bitter pills we had to swallow...
For us to become
better persons.

I am glad through all those
we went through in college,
it has made us closer,
stronger,
more resolute.
And now, I am proud to call you
a sister-in-arms,
a fellow sociologist,
my 'friend.'

Best regards,
on your 21st birthday!
